My Life in Novels
Not only do I write books. I've been relying on them since childhood to deepen my understanding of the world.
There’s nothing better than discovering a great piece of writing.
Imagine going into your favorite indie bookshop. You’re browsing the stacks when a friendly bookshop owner approaches. You strike up a conversation about what you’re looking for. She offers her opinion on a few novels she recently finished. Soon you’re engaged in a dialogue about your favorite book ever, and why those characters have stayed with you for a lifetime. Expect the same from Dear Fiction. Every installment will be like walking into your favorite bookshop and talking reading and writing with people who appreciate stories as much as you do.
And so, I introduce: Dear Fiction
I love sharing mistakes I’ve made in writing, offering tips to building stronger, more engaging manuscripts and interviewing authors about challenges they’ve overcome in their writing. I want to discuss what makes characters tick, why authors make certain decisions in building their plots, and why certain novels shoot to the bestseller list. Dear Fiction is a community of aspiring and experienced writers and passionate book lovers looking for a kernel of wisdom to inspire them.
Dear Fiction isn’t just a newsletter; it’s a literary conversation. We are here to learn.
After writing two novels (and finishing up a third), what I’ve discovered is that you can never stop learning to be a better writer. Whether it’s a short news article or an 80,000 word manuscript, everyone’s work can always benefit from another round of edits. Don’t forget, too: To love words is to love reading them just as much as writing them. That means diving into as many great stories as you have time for — and taking the lessons learned into your own pages. Expect book recommendations, publishing trends, novel travel ideas, book club picks and lots of giveaways.
How to Join the Conversation
Subscribe now, and expect to get a weekly installment of Dear Fiction in your Inbox on Wednesdays. It’s something to look forward to mid-week. Best of all, it’s free.
One last thing: Meet my dog Luna
You’ll be hearing about her, too, since she sleeps near me whenever I write. Cute pictures may get posted sometimes.
Thank you, everyone!
